Adding tax to a price
To add 8% sales tax to a price of 50, calculate 50 × 0.08 = 4 tax, then add it to get a total of 54. The calculator displays the pre-tax price, tax amount and total separately.
Removing tax from a tax-inclusive total
If 54 already includes 8% sales tax, divide 54 by 1.08 to find the pre-tax price of 50. Subtract that result from the inclusive total to find the tax amount. Subtracting 8% directly from 54 would not reverse the original operation.
Why the rate needs checking
- Rates can differ by state, province, municipality or other local area.
- Some products and services may have different treatment.
- Shipping, discounts and bundled items can affect the taxable base.
- A current official rate matters more than a calculator default.
Keep the calculation traceable
When using the result for a quote or budget, save the original price, rate, date and location with your notes. For tax filing or a disputed charge, confirm the treatment with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser.
Common questions
Can I calculate tax backwards?
Yes. Divide a tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the tax rate to estimate the pre-tax amount.
Does the calculator know my local rate?
No. Enter the rate that applies to your transaction after checking current local information.
Does a discount happen before tax?
That depends on the transaction and local rules. Enter the taxable amount that applies to your scenario.
