How to Add or Remove VAT from a Price

VAT calculations are often confused because adding a rate and removing a rate use different operations. This guide shows the difference between net price, VAT and the final VAT-inclusive amount.

Adding VAT

If a price before VAT is 100 and the VAT rate is 15%, the VAT amount is 15 and the total is 115. The calculation is the net amount multiplied by the VAT rate, then added to the net amount.

The tool separates the original amount, the VAT amount and the total so you can see which number belongs on each side of an invoice or estimate.

Removing VAT correctly

If a price already includes 15% VAT, do not simply subtract 15% from the total. The VAT-inclusive total represents 115% of the net amount, so the net amount is the total divided by 1.15. The VAT is the difference between the inclusive total and that net amount.

Check the rate and the transaction

  • VAT rates vary by country, category and sometimes customer status.
  • Some goods or services can be zero-rated, exempt or subject to special rules.
  • A calculator does not decide whether a business must register or how a return should be filed.
  • Keep the rate and date beside the calculation when preparing records.

Use official local information

This tool performs the arithmetic you provide. Confirm the applicable rate and treatment with the relevant tax authority or a qualified tax professional before issuing an invoice, filing a return or making a compliance decision.

Common questions

How do I remove 15% VAT from 115?

Divide 115 by 1.15 to get the VAT-exclusive amount of 100; the VAT amount is 15.

Can I use this for every country?

You can enter the rate used for your scenario, but the tool does not determine local exemptions, registration rules or special treatments.

Is VAT the same as sales tax?

They are different tax systems even though both can affect a final price. Use the terminology and rules that apply to the transaction’s location.
